This unique cultural immersion program offers travelers the opportunity to experience authentic Pamiri village life and traditional practices that have been preserved for generations in the remote mountains of Badakhshan.
The program is organized by Pamir Eco Tours in collaboration with the Small Academy on Agrobiodiversity and the environmental organization Environmental Consultancy. The activities take place in the mountain village of Choshkandez, located about 25 km from Khorog along the road to Dushanbe.
Participants will be introduced to the traditional lifestyle of the Pamiri people, including farming, local crafts, music, food preparation, and family traditions. The program provides hands-on experience with agricultural practices, village crafts, and cultural ceremonies that form an important part of daily life in the Pamir region.
Choshkandez is also home to the famous “Heart-Opening Garden”, a unique agrobiological garden that preserves local plant diversity and serves as a research site for scientists from the Pamir Biological Institute.

Day 1 – Arrival in Choshkandez Village
Arrival and welcome at the Small Agrobiological Academy summer camp. Introduction to the program and orientation.
Participants will learn about the goals of the academy and the importance of preserving traditional knowledge and biodiversity in the Pamir region.
Evening welcome dinner with traditional music and an opportunity for participants to meet and get to know each other.
Day 2 – Traditional Food and Handicraft Festival
Experience a vibrant local festival showcasing traditional Pamiri cuisine and handicrafts.
Activities include demonstrations of traditional weaving techniques, preparation of local dishes, baking bread, and producing handmade wool products such as socks, shawls, and scarves.
Participants will also observe traditional craft-making and food preparation by local villagers.
Day 3 – A Day in the Life of a Village Farmer
Participate in traditional agricultural activities alongside local farmers.
Experience plowing fields using oxen, sowing seeds, planting trees, grafting fruit trees, and learning about traditional irrigation and farming techniques used in mountain environments.
Day 4 – Traditional Pamiri Architecture and Crafts
Visit traditional Pamiri houses and learn about their unique architectural design and symbolism.
Participants will also visit a traditional water mill and a blacksmith workshop, where local artisans demonstrate traditional tools and craftsmanship.
Day 5 – Pamiri Wedding Traditions
Discover the fascinating traditions of a Pamiri wedding ceremony through a live cultural demonstration.
Participants will observe traditional rituals including bridal preparation, ceremonial dressing of the bride and groom, music performances, and symbolic wedding customs.
Local performers recreate the wedding ceremony accompanied by traditional musicians.
Day 6 – Cultural Visit to Khorog
Excursion to Khorog, the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region.
Visits include:
• Pamir Botanical Garden
• Museum of the Pamir Biological Institute
• University of Central Asia campus
• Khorog State University
Participants will learn about education, science, and research in the Pamir region.
Day 7 – Traditional Music of Badakhshan
Introduction to the rich musical traditions of the Pamir region.
Local musicians demonstrate traditional instruments including:
• Badakhshan rubab
• Daira (frame drum)
• Davsoz
Participants will enjoy live performances and learn about the cultural role of music in local celebrations and community life.
Day 8 – Rural Livestock Life
Spend a day with local shepherds and herders learning about traditional livestock practices.
Activities include:
• Milking animals
• Sheep shearing
• Dairy processing (butter, yogurt, and curd)
• Learning about traditional pastoral life in the mountains.
Day 9 – Traditional Games and Community Activities
Participants will be introduced to ancient traditional games played in Pamiri villages.
These include games such as:
• Lash
• Sanjak
• Tug-of-war
The activities provide insight into the social traditions and community spirit of the region.
