Embark on a serious 10-day road trip along the legendary Pamir Highway, the second highest highway in the world. Starting in Dushanbe and ending in Osh, this journey takes you through the “Roof of the World,” following the tracks of ancient traders and explorers. Immerse yourself in a cacophony of cultures, stay in welcoming homestays, and witness traditions that have remained unchanged for generations.
Day 1: Dushanbe – Kalaikhumb
Set off east towards the Pamirs, driving through beautiful scenery and traditional villages.
Cross the Shurabad Pass (2,200m) and visit the ancient 8th-century Hulbuk Fortress.
Arrive in Kalaikhumb in the early evening.
Day 2: Kalaikhumb – Hijez (Bartang Valley)
Drive along the Panj River, forming the border with Afghanistan.
Enter the Bartang Valley and arrive at Khidjez village for a family-run homestay experience.
Day 3: Gisev Valley Trekking – Khorog
Trek 8–10km through the magnificent scenery of Gisev, passing clear blue lakes and gnarled trees.
Drive to Shughnan District along the Afghan border and stay at the Choshkandez Eco Village.
Day 4: Choshkandez – Ishkashim (Wakhan Valley)
Explore Khorog’s local bazaar and soak in the Garm Chashma hot springs.
Enter the Tajik side of the Wakhan Valley, passing ancient gem mines mentioned by Marco Polo.
Day 5: Ishkashim – Langar (Afghan Market)
If on a Saturday, visit the cross-border Afghan Market on an island in the Panj River.
Visit the 3rd-century Khahkha Fortress, Yamchun Fort, and the 4th-century Buddhist stupas at Vrang.
Relax in the Bibi Fatima hot springs.
Day 6: Langar – Jarty Gumboz
Drive via the Khargush Pass (4,344m) into the dramatic, rocky lunar landscapes of the high plateau.
Visit Bulunkul and Yashil Kul lakes before reaching a nomadic herders’ camp.
Overnight in a traditional Kyrgyz Yurt.
Day 7: Trekking to Bel Airyk Pass
Hike up the Bel Airyk Pass (4,835m) for majestic views of the Hindu Kush and Zor Kul Lake.
Observe wildlife such as Marco Polo sheep, ibex, and eagles.
Day 8: Jarty Gumboz – Murghab
Travel to Murghab (3,670m), the center of the East Pamir, passing through spectacular high-altitude terrain.
View the 7,546m Chinese peak of Mustag Ata in the distance.
Day 9: Murghab – Sary Tash (Kyrgyzstan)
Cross the Ak-Baital Pass (4,655m), the highest road section in the former Soviet Union.
Pass Karakul Lake and cross the Kyzyl Art Pass (4,282m) border into Kyrgyzstan.

Day 10: Sary Tash – Osh
Depart the high mountains for the lush farmlands of Kyrgyzstan.
Cross the Taldyk Pass (3,554m) and arrive in Osh, Kyrgyzstan’s oldest city.
