Pamir Highway Adventure: Dushanbe – Osh (8 Days)

Overview

The Pamir Highway (M41) is one of the most spectacular high-altitude road journeys in the world. Traveling from Dushanbe to Osh, this 8-day adventure takes you through dramatic mountain landscapes, the Wakhan Corridor, the remote Bartang Valley, and across some of the highest road passes in Central Asia.

This journey combines scenic driving, moderate trekking, cultural encounters, and authentic stays in family-run guesthouses. Travel in a 4WD vehicle with an experienced local driver and discover one of the most unforgettable routes in Central Asia.

Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1 – Dushanbe → Khorog (via Darvaz).

    Departure from Dushanbe toward the Pamir Mountains. En route, visit the 11th-century Hulbuk Fortress and the memorial complex of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani in Kulob.

    We continue over the Shurobod Pass before entering GBAO. Following the Panj River, enjoy the first views of Afghanistan across the border.

    Overnight in Khorog (or nearby Choshkandez).

    Distance: 580 km / approx. 10 hours.
    Accommodation: Guesthouse.
    Elevation: 2,200 m.

  • Day 2 – Khorog → Bartang Valley (Jizev).

    Drive toward the rugged Bartang Valley. From the trailhead, begin a 2-hour hike (6 km) to Jizev village.

    Overnight with a local family in a traditional homestay.

    Driving: approx. 210 km / 6 hours.
    Hiking: 6 km / 2 hours.
    Elevation: 2,500 m.

  • Day 3 – Bartang Valley → Khorog.

    Morning hike back to the vehicle. Drive to Khorog and spend the afternoon exploring the town.

    Optional visit to Khorog Botanical Garden.

    Driving: 85 km / 3 hours.
    Hiking: 6 km / 2 hours.
    Elevation: 2,200 m.

  • Day 4 – Khorog → Langar (Wakhan Corridor).

    Travel along the Wakhan Corridor with stops at:

    • 4th-century Buddhist stupa.
    • Yamchun Fortress.
    • Sufi Mubarak Qadam Museum.
    • Bibi Fatima hot springs.

    Overnight in Langar or a nearby village.

    Distance: 110 km / 4–5 hours.
    Elevation: 2,900 m.

  • Day 5 – Trek to Engels Peak.

    Full-day hike toward the foot of Engels Peak (6,507 m).

    Moderate to challenging trekking day (8–9 hours round trip).
    Return to Langar for overnight.

    Hiking: approx. 18–20 km.
    Maximum elevation: approx. 4,000 m.

  • Day 6 – Langar → Bulunkul (via Yashilkul).

    Cross the Kargush Pass toward the high-altitude lakes of Yashilkul and Bulunkul.

    Bulunkul is known as one of the coldest inhabited places in Tajikistan.

    Overnight in a local homestay.

    Distance: 160 km / approx. 5 hours.
    Elevation: 3,850 m.

  • Day 7 – Bulunkul → Karakul Lake.

    Drive via Alichur and Murghab. Cross the Ak-Baital Pass (4,655 m), one of the highest road passes in the world.

    Arrival at Karakul Lake for an overnight stay.

    Distance: 270 km / approx. 6 hours
    Elevation: 4,000 m..

  • Day 8 – Karakul → Osh.

    Cross the Tajik–Kyrgyz border and travel through the scenic Alay Valley.

    Optional stop at Tulpar-Kul Lake for views of Lenin Peak (weather permitting).

    Arrival in Osh in the evening.

    Distance: approx. 250 km / 5–6 hours.
    Final elevation: 900 m.
