The Pamir Highway (M41) is one of the most spectacular high-altitude road journeys in the world. This 7-day group expedition from Dushanbe to Osh follows the legendary route through the heart of the Pamir Mountains, along the Afghan border, across remote valleys, and over some of the highest motorable passes on Earth.
Designed as a small group tour, this program combines dramatic landscapes, cultural encounters, moderate hiking, and authentic stays in family-run guesthouses. Travel in a 4WD vehicle with an experienced local driver and share the journey with like-minded adventurers.
This itinerary offers a balanced mix of scenic driving and short trekking experiences while covering the essential highlights of the Pamir Highway.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 – Dushanbe → Kalaikhumb.
Departure from Dushanbe in the morning. We follow the Panj River toward the Pamir Mountains, enjoying scenic landscapes along the Afghan border.
Arrival in Kalaikhumb for dinner and overnight in a guesthouse.
Distance/drive time: 360 km / 7–8 hours.
Accommodation: Guesthouse (shared facilities).
Elevation: approx. 1,200 m.
Day 2 – Kalaikhumb → Khorog.
Continue driving along the Panj River toward Khorog, the capital of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).
The road offers impressive views of Afghan villages across the river. Arrival in Khorog in the afternoon. Optional visit to the Botanical Garden, one of the highest botanical gardens in the world.
Distance/drive time: approx. 240 km / 6–7 hours.
Accommodation: Guesthouse.
Elevation: 2,200 m.
Day 3 – Khorog → Ishkashim → Langar (Wakhan Corridor).
Today, we enter the Wakhan Corridor, one of the most scenic parts of the Pamirs.
Stops include:
• Yamchun Fortress.
• 4th-century Buddhist stupa.
• Sufi Mubarak Qadam Museum.
• Bibi Fatima hot springs.
Overnight in Langar village.
Distance/drive time: 130 km / 4–5 hours.
Accommodation: Guesthouse.
Elevation: 2,900 m.
Day 4 – Langar → Murghab.
We cross the Kargush Pass and leave the Wakhan Valley, heading toward the high-altitude plateau of Eastern Pamir.
En route, we pass Bulunkul and Yashilkul Lakes before arriving in Murghab, the administrative center of the region.

Accommodation: Guesthouse.
Elevation: 3,600 m.
Day 5 – Murghab → Karakul Lake.
Today, we drive across the dramatic landscapes of Eastern Pamir.
We cross the Ak-Baital Pass (4,655 m), one of the highest road passes in the world, before reaching the remote and beautiful Karakul Lake.
Overnight in a lakeside homestay.
Distance/drive time: approx. 130 km / 3–4 hours.
Accommodation: Basic homestay.
Elevation: 4,000 m.
Day 6 – Karakul → Tulpar-Kul (Kyrgyzstan).
After breakfast, we cross the Tajik–Kyrgyz border and enter the scenic Alay Valley.
Weather permitting, we stop at Tulpar-Kul Lake for panoramic views of Lenin Peak (7,134 m). Short optional hike in the area.
Distance/drive time: approx. 200 km / 5–6 hours.
Accommodation: Guesthouse or yurt camp (depending on season).
Elevation: approx. 3,500 m.
Day 7 – Tulpar-Kul → Osh.
Final drive through the Alay Valley toward Osh.
Arrival in Osh in the afternoon. Drop off at your hotel, marking the end of your Pamir Highway adventure.
